Unveiling the future of airport ground operations with AI automation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On September 20th partners from four European countries met in Brussels to give the start to ASTAIR, a new-born SESAR Joint Undertaking project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASTAIR stands for<\/span><b> Auto-Steer Taxi at AIRport<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its aim is to introduce <\/span><b>advanced Artificial Intelligence-driven support tools that will oversee a fully automated ground operations system at airports<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The project focuses on exploring the transition to fully automated surface movements, emphasizing engine-off taxiing whenever feasible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nowadays, automation plays a central role in enhancing airport ground traffic capacity while reducing human workload and environmental impact. In this regard, ASTAIR envisions leveraging AI for tasks such as granting clearances and managing fleets of autonomous tugs, all while <\/span><b>ensuring that human operators remain an essential part of the overall process<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrating more closely existing processes in an automated supervision system will facilitate global optimisation, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said <\/span><b>Mathieu Cousy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from ENAC, the project coordinator. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The objective of project ASTAIR is to make it \u2018human readable\u2019 and easy to handle by the operator.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASTAIR builds on the achievements of the Horizon 2020 funded project <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aeon-project.eu\/\"><b>AEON project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Advanced Engine Off Navigation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Led by ENAC, in collaboration with Deep Blue and TU Delft, AEON explored a <\/span><b>new concept of operation to support engine-off taxing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It introduces the role of a <\/span><b>fleet manager<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to supervise and allocate a fleet of towing vehicles to aircraft with dedicated algorithms and interfaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elevating the level of automation overseeing all ground movements is expected to enhance the overall <\/span><b>predictability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of airport turnaround operations and <\/span><b>effectively <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">address the increased complexity introduced by engine-off taxiing techniques. This will be possible thanks to the joint forces of the project\u2019s partners.
