On February 20, 2025, the DIALOG team had the opportunity to engage with the work of Simon Binz, a researcher from Radboud University, during a productive technical meeting titled Soaring to New Heights: Designing a Reliable ATCO AI System. Simon presented key insights from a study conducted by students from the university’s Ethics in AI course, including Giulio Mecacci, Banu Buruk, Pim Haselager, and others.
The study critically assessed DIALOG’s alignment with the EU AI Act, identifying potential legal and ethical risks while providing recommendations to ensure compliance. These insights are particularly valuable as DIALOG advances in the development of AI systems designed to enhance human-AI collaboration in Air Traffic Management.
By ensuring compliance with the EU AI Act and other ethical standards, DIALOG’s AI-driven teamwork assistant can seamlessly support air traffic controllers, optimizing workload management and anticipating assistance needs based on real-time data and context. This approach guarantees a more efficient, safe, and adaptive interaction between controllers and AI systems, directly impacting air traffic management practices.
We deeply appreciate the students’ contributions, which are essential for the continued success and responsible development of the project.
