At the SESAR Innovation Days 2023 in Seville, Europe’s leading ATM and aviation researchers convened. This key event, held from November 27th to 30th, showcased the groundbreaking research and innovative ideas shaping the future of air traffic management. The HUCAN project stood out for its significant contributions.

A key event was the roundtable discussion titled Artificial Intelligence in ATM featuring Giuseppe Contissa from the European University Institute, partner of HUCAN. The panel, moderated by Ruben Flohr of SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking, discussed the role of AI in ATM, highlighting both opportunities and challenges. The panel included industry experts like José Manuel Cordero from CRIDA A.I.E., Luis Barbero of GATCO, Paula López-Catalá representing Innaxis, and Ramon Dalmau-Codina from EUROCONTROL. They shared operational use cases and ongoing research initiatives on AI in ATM. ATM is perfectly suited for a boost in automation and AI-powered assistance. The massive amount of data generated by routine procedures creates an opportunity to leverage AI and extensive automation. This would significantly improve operational efficiency within the aviation sector, while freeing up human air traffic controllers to concentrate on tasks that are critical for safety.

Additionally, HUCAN presented its innovative projects through a poster presentation led by Gabriella Gigante from CIRA – Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali, providing insights into their objectives and visions.

Overall, the participation of HUCAN and its partners demonstrated a commitment to advancing AI-driven solutions in air traffic management, fostering collaboration and development in the field.
