On 24 September 2024, the first review meeting of the HUCAN project took place at the SESAR headquarters in Brussels. The meeting was attended by SESAR officers Oznur Uygur, Dean Swink, Daniel Brandi and Ruben Flohr, along with all project partners who presented the progress of their work over the past 12 months.

 

The project coordinator, Paola Lanzi, led the discussions, outlining key achievements including the completion of the initial objectives, such as the mapping of the automation landscape in EU mobility and ATM and a review of the regulatory framework for advanced automation in aviation. The team also launched WP4 and WP5, transitioning into the second phase of the project focused on developing a holistic approach to the certification of automated systems. Elisa Spiller, deputy project coordinatior, presneted the achievements of the the Stakeholder Consultation Group’s engagement and the upcoming publication of a certification glossary were also key highlights of the meeting, while WP6 leader presented an overview of the materials produced in the first year, including a project flyer and rollup, and shared insights on future outreach strategies.

The SESAR team provided valuable feedback, particularly regarding the project’s Technology Readiness Level (TRL), which was confirmed at TRL2. The meeting also highlighted significant collaborations, including with EASA, whose involvement will deepen in the coming months.

This review showcased HUCAN’s robust progress and set a clear path for the second phase of the project, which aims to redefine the certification and approval processes for human-centric, AI-powered ATM systems.
