While existing Arrival Managers (AMAN) help sequence traffic, they don\u2019t always suggest the most efficient paths \u2014 and controllers may lack the capacity to optimise trajectories on the fly. Enter TADA: by learning from past ATCO decisions, this human-centric assistant will propose smarter, more efficient sequencing, easing ATCO workload.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">In recent years, Europe\u2019s major airports have faced growing challenges. As air traffic rebounds and even surpasses pre-pandemic levels, Terminal Manoeuvring Areas (TMAs) \u2014 the airspace close to airports where arriving and departing aircraft are carefully sequenced \u2014 are becoming increasingly congested.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\"><strong>Air traffic controllers (ATCOs)<\/strong> play a crucial role in maintaining safety and efficiency in these busy skies. But with rising numbers of flights, their workload intensifies. Ensuring that each aircraft is guided along an optimal path, respecting arrival sequences and timings while also seeking more efficient routes, is a complex task that demands razor-sharp attention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">This is precisely where the TADA project steps in. By <a href=\"https:\/\/research.dblue.it\/tada\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">developing a novel Digital Assistant trained on historical ATCO decision data<\/a>, <strong>TADA aims to support controllers with decision-making and action selection for flight trajectories<\/strong> \u2014 all delivered through a user-friendly, human-centric system.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"--fontsize: 36; line-height: 1.2; font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 600; text-align: justify; --fontSize: 36;\" data-fontsize=\"36\" data-lineheight=\"43.2px\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"600\">Growing Workloads and the Limits of Current Tools<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">The air transport sector is steadily recovering from the impacts of COVID-19. Passenger demand is soaring, and with it, the volume of flights managed by Europe\u2019s ATM (Air Traffic Management) systems. This places <strong>additional pressure on ATCOs<\/strong>, who must safely accommodate growing traffic, while minimising delays and maintaining high operational performance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">To assist them, many airports already rely on <\/span><strong><a style=\"font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px;\" href=\"https:\/\/skybrary.aero\/articles\/arrival-manager-aman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">AMAN (Arrival Manager)<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-g=\"\"><strong> systems<\/strong>. These advanced tools:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">Calculate arrival sequences and times, taking into account aircraft types, preferred flight profiles, performance and weight categories, airspace constraints, runway availability, inbound flow rates, and meteorological conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">Present planned inbound traffic flows directly at controller working positions, along with advisories to help ATCOs meet the planned sequences and arrival times.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">However, there are inherent limitations. <strong>AMAN may suggest trajectories that<\/strong>, while operationally safe, <strong>could be improved to achieve faster, more efficient sequencing<\/strong>. It ultimately falls on ATCOs to decide whether and how to adjust these trajectories. Crucially, such decision demands rapid analysis and high mental bandwidth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400; font-size: 18px; text-align: justify;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">In the intense environment of a busy hub, where controllers\u2019 cognitive load and span of attention are already stretched to their limits, opportunities to fine-tune the sequencing for greater efficiency might be missed simply because there isn\u2019t enough capacity to evaluate all possible adjustments in real time.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"--fontsize: 36; line-height: 1.2; font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 600; --fontSize: 36;\" data-fon=\"\" data-fontsize=\"36\" data-lineheight=\"43.2px\">The TADA Digital Assistant<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">The TADA project (Trajectory Based Operations Digital Assistant), funded by the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking under the Horizon Europe programme, seeks to address this very challenge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fus=\"\">What makes TADA unique?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">It <strong>leverages machine learning<\/strong> techniques trained <strong>on historical data from ATCO<\/strong> decisions, effectively learning how experienced controllers have adjusted trajectories in similar situations in the past.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">Then, <strong>it uses this knowledge to propose<\/strong> actionable, context-aware <strong>suggestions to ATCOs for improving arrival sequencing and spacing<\/strong> \u2014 beyond what traditional AMAN advisories might offer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">The TADA Digital Assistant is designed to be <strong>human-centric, seamlessly integrating<\/strong> into existing workflows. It <strong>does not replace human<\/strong> expertise, but complements it, helping controllers make faster, more informed decisions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\">The system is being <strong>developed with continuous input from end users<\/strong>. Through regular meetings and workshops with ATCOs and ATM stakeholders, TADA ensures that the Digital Assistant aligns with operational realities and truly meets the needs of those who will use it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; font-size: 18px; font-family: 'Titillium Web'; font-weight: 400;\" data-fusion-font=\"true\" data-fusion-google-font=\"Titillium Web\" data-fusion-google-variant=\"400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/research.dblue.it\/tada\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">By combining powerful data-driven predictions with intuitive, explainable recommendations<\/a>, TADA can help <strong>unlock more efficient traffic flows<\/strong> in Europe\u2019s most congested TMAs.
