In mid-November 2024, Rome became the stage for <\/span><\/i>groundbreaking discussions in air traffic management (ATM) and artificial intelligence (AI)<\/i><\/b>. TRUSTY was at the heart of this week of innovation, showcasing cutting-edge solutions and fostering key collaborations at the SESAR AI Flagship Workshop and SESAR Innovation Days.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

A Week to Remember<\/b><\/h3>\n

The week began on 11 November 2024, with the SESAR AI Flagship Workshop gathering <\/span>56 participants from 23 SESAR projects<\/b> at Spazio Europa, Rome. The event brought together researchers, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to <\/span>align AI innovation with aviation certification standards<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This workshop set the stage for the SESAR Innovation Days (SIDs), held from 12 to 15 November. A cornerstone event for the SESAR program, the SIDs hosted <\/span>over 100 participants per day<\/b> and provided an <\/span>ideal platform for showcasing exploratory research and future-focused solutions in ATM<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

SESAR AI Flagship Workshop: Connecting Ideas and Institutions<\/b><\/h3>\n

At the workshop, TRUSTY\u2019s contributions stood out for their focus on transparency and user-centered AI solutions for aviation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Christophe Hurter <\/b>from <\/span>ENAC<\/b> represented TRUSTY, delivering a compelling presentation on <\/span>Human-Machine Teaming<\/b> and <\/span>“Visual Intelligence”<\/b>. His talk emphasized the need for <\/span>AI tools that prioritize transparency and usability<\/b>, highlighting the collaboration with CODA in addressing these challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Roundtable discussions allowed TRUSTY and other participants to delve into key topics such as <\/span>AI explainability and liability<\/b>. The presence of <\/span>EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency)<\/b> enriched the dialogue, connecting SESAR projects with <\/span>regulatory frameworks and the AI Roadmap 2.0<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

TRUSTY’s Exclusive Demo at the SIDs: Real-Time Adaptation for Air Traffic Control<\/b><\/h4>\n

TRUSTY\u2019s impactful week continued at the SESAR Innovation Days, where it showcased its <\/span>innovative approach to adaptive automation<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>joint demo<\/b>, developed with CODA and BrainSigns, featured <\/span>Mindtooth technology and virtual reality headsets<\/b>. This state-of-the-art system <\/span>adapts in real time to the user\u2019s cognitive and emotional state<\/b>, dynamically adjusting the interface based on stress and mental workload.<\/span><\/p>\n

Participants were captivated by the <\/span>live neurofeedback demonstration<\/b>, which monitored metrics such as <\/span>stress and cognitive load<\/b>. The system illustrated how <\/span>AI can assist air traffic controllers in managing high-pressure situations by creating adaptive environments<\/b> that respond to real-time user needs.<\/span><\/p>\n

This demo not only highlighted the potential of <\/span>AI in aviation<\/b> but also drew <\/span>positive feedback from attendees<\/b>, reinforcing TRUSTY\u2019s role as a leader in <\/span>integrating physiological data with AI for safer, more efficient air traffic control<\/b><\/p>\n

Reflections from TRUSTY Representatives<\/b><\/h3>\n

The TRUSTY team played an active role throughout the events, sharing insights, building connections, and gathering valuable feedback. Alexander Veyrie, representing ENAC, reflected on the <\/span>collaborative atmosphere<\/b> of the SIDs, particularly appreciating the sessions dedicated to human-AI interaction. He remarked on the high quality of the plenary discussions, stating:<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cAs a co-representative of ENAC for the TRUSTY SESAR exploratory research project, attending the SIDs 2024 conference in Rome was both insightful and rewarding. The plenary sessions were remarkable, with <\/span><\/i>high-quality speakers addressing key topics and raising thought-provoking questions<\/i><\/b>.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Christophe Hurter, also from ENAC, engaged in meaningful discussions with participants from projects exploring <\/span>hybrid automation and Visual Intelligence<\/b>. These exchanges allowed TRUSTY to delve deeper into potential applications of its AI solutions, highlighting <\/span>opportunities for refinement and future collaboration<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pietro Arico\u2019, from The Sapienza University of Rome, emphasized the <\/span>positive reception of TRUSTY\u2019s use of neurophysiological data for adaptive automation<\/b>. He noted how the feedback received during the event led to valuable exchanges with other SESAR projects, such as the <\/span>DIALOG project<\/b>, creating opportunities for synergy and collaborative development.<\/span><\/p>\n

The TRUSTY representatives left the events inspired by the connections made, the recognition received, and the new avenues for research that emerged.
