Today marks a significant milestone in aviation history as the global community celebrates World Pilots Day, honoring the pioneering spirit of Turkish aviator Fesa Evrensev. Born in 1878 in Istanbul, Evrensev’s legacy in the skies began on this very day in 1912 when he took his inaugural flight.

A distinguished graduate of the Military Academy, Evrensev’s passion for flight was evident from the start, excelling as the top student in the pilot class. His remarkable journey continued as he ascended to the role of General Manager of the State Airlines Administration, laying the groundwork for what would later become Turkish Airlines. Throughout his illustrious career, Evrensev held various positions within the Turkish Aeronautical Association, solidifying his status as a towering figure in aviation.

Recognizing the pivotal role of Evrensev in Turkish aviation history, the Turkish Airlines Pilots’ Association was the first to designate April 26 as Pilots Day, commemorating his flight in 1912.

The global significance of this date was further amplified by the International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA). Founded in 1948 to provide a unified voice for pilots worldwide, IFALPA represents over 100,000 pilots from 104 associations. In 2013, IFALPA recognized the need to honor the contributions of pilots and seized upon April 26, the anniversary of Evrensev’s first flight, as an opportune moment to establish World Pilots Day.

Since its inception in 2014, World Pilots Day has served as a testament to the courage, dedication, and innovation of pilots across the globe. Today, as the world celebrates this occasion, we pay tribute to Fesa Evrensev and all pilots who continue to push the boundaries of flight and ensure the safety and efficiency of air travel worldwide.
