The ASTAIR project enjoyed a highly productive week at the SESAR Innovation Days in Rome, which took place from the 12 to the 15 of November 2024. Several key milestones were reached. On Monday, 11 December, ASTAIR actively participated in the AI Flagship Workshop organised by SESAR with support from Engage 2, focusing on the future trajectory of artificial intelligence in aviation. With 56 participants from 23 SESAR projects, the workshop served as a strong continuation of discussions on aligning AI innovation with aviation certification requirements.A key highlight of the event was the active participation of representatives from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Their involvement deepened the connection between SESAR projects and the institution driving the AI Roadmap 2.0, fostering a shared understanding of the roadmap’s goals and bridging the gap between research outputs and regulatory needs

In addition to the workshop, the team took advantage of their time in Rome to convene a consortium meeting, assessing the project’s current progress and strategising the next phase of development.

The SIDs themselves offered an excellent platform for ASTAIR to engage with the broader SESAR community. During the event, Malte von der Burg of Delft University of Technology presented the paper Exploring Human-Automation Interactions in Next-Generation Airport Surface Movement Operations: an Agent-based Modelling Approach, providing valuable insights into how human and automated decision-makers can effectively collaborate in future airport environments.
