At the 14th EASN International Conference in Thessaloniki, the ASTAIR project presented its approach to automating airport ground operations, including engine-off taxiing techniques. Vladimíra Čanádyová, Lead consultant at Deep Blue and representing ASTAIR, shared the project’s vision for seamless human-AI collaboration to manage both engine-off and conventional taxiing operations across airport surfaces.
ASTAIR’s concept focuses on increasing the level of automation in managing ground movements, improving predictability and enhancing environmental sustainability. The project aims to provide autonomous management of vehicles, routing, and parking allocation, ultimately optimizing airport efficiency while maintaining safety. Key insights were drawn from interviews and workshops with major European airports, such as Paris Charles-de-Gaulle, Amsterdam Schiphol, and Frankfurt, where the project’s use cases were explored in real-world contexts.
The ASTAIR project continues to push the boundaries of airport automation, aiming to develop tools that integrate with existing systems such as A-CDM and A-SMGCS, while ensuring human operators retain control in critical situations.
