A week-long real-time simulation was successfully conducted at the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub (EIH) in Brétigny, in collaboration with the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency (PANSA), to test the Optimised Runway Delivery (ORD) tool for Warsaw Airport.

The ORD tool helps air traffic controllers precisely space arriving aircraft, improving efficiency and sustainability. EUROCONTROL experts conducted this exercise using their advanced simulation platform as part of the SESAR Joint Undertaking HERON project, marking a significant step towards implementation.

The simulation reached a Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL6), the pre-implementation phase, offering controllers from PANSA the opportunity to test the tool in a near-operational environment. The exercise also allowed for the refinement of detailed air traffic control procedures, further preparing the solution for deployment.

By integrating the ORD tool into operations, Warsaw Airport aims to achieve greater fuel efficiency, improved safety, and enhanced human performance compared to current practices.

EUROCONTROL experts from Brétigny and Brussels, together with the PANSA team, enabled the successful simulation through their combined efforts. The insights and data gathered during the exercise will strongly support PANSA’s future plans for the implementation of the ORD tool at Warsaw Airport.
